City of Westminster grant planning consent for the conversion of the BBC Maida Vale Studios

The BBC Maida Vale Studios are being redeveloped by the MVS Partnership, a group including Hans Zimmer, after being sold by the BBC in 2023

The Grade-II listed building will be transformed into a multi-purpose studio for film, music, and sound production, incorporating three refurbished studios, a new rock and roll studio, 30 music rooms, and five composer suites. The project focuses on a “retrofit-first refurbishment” to improve energy efficiency and technology while revealing and preserving historic elements like the Edwardian roof trusses.

Redevelopment plans

  • Multi-purpose use: The studio will become a hub for music and film production, with both creative and production spaces.
  • Audio wing: This section will house three refurbished studios, a new rock and roll studio, 30 music rooms, and five composer suites.
  • Visual wing: The plans also include a visual wing for film production.
  • Restoration and enhancement: The project will restore historic Edwardian roof trusses and install a new, modern, and more sustainable zinc-clad roof, with the addition of biodiverse green roofing.
  • Basement and exterior: A new screening and sound studio will be created in the basement, and exterior additions like a plant tower will be removed or replaced.
  • On-site amenities: The plans include a restaurant with an external terrace, food and beverage facilities, and other amenities for staff and visitors.

Project details

  • Partnership: The redevelopment is led by the MVS Partnership LLP, which includes composer Hans Zimmer and producers Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner.
  • Sale and ownership: The BBC sold the studios to the partnership in 2023 and will move its operations to new facilities in Stratford by late 2025.
